9 Ways to Weaken Your Marriage

step forward into growth or step backward into safety.

9 Ways to Weaken Your Marriage

In any given moment, we have two options. That’s it.

I didn’t know this when my marriage was gasping for air.

I could’ve sworn there was a third option — pray, wait patiently, and believe things will magically get better.

Dumb with a capital D.

God doesn’t change marriages.

He changes people, and he wanted to start with with me.

He wanted to stretch me. Help me face my inadequacies as a husband. Teach me empathy. Dismantle my passive-aggressive tendencies. Make me more like William Wallace.

He patiently endured my praying and sniveling instead.

Husband, if you’re determined to end up in divorce court, here are nine more ways to weaken your marriage:

  1. Win lots of arguments
  2. Keep telling yourself, “She’s impossible to please”
  3. Wait for her to change her attitude before you change yours
  4. Refuse to see a marriage counselor or coach
  5. Use porn when she’s sexually unavailable
  6. Keep score
  7. Say things like, “You should love me because I’m your husband!”
  8. Avoid her when she’s angry or sad
  9. Forfeit quality time together on the weekends by letting your kids play travel ball

Step forward and grow

If being drawn and quartered in divorce court isn’t your thing, I have really good news — the “step forward and grow” list is much shorter:

  1. Be first in your marriage

Yup, that’s it.

The first to smile. The first to listen. The first to call bullshit on yourself. The first to say, “You know something, you’re right.” The first to hold her hand. The first to forgive. The first to ask for help. The first to see a marriage counselor. The first to write a note. The first to put your phone away. The first to move in her direction. The first to say, “I’d marry you all over again.” The first to massage her shoulders. The first to carve out quality time for each other. The first to plan a date night. The first to ask, “If you had one piece of marriage advice for me, what would it be?”

Sons of Scotland, safety is an illusion.

There’s nothing “safe” about playing small.

Growth is our only option.

“Forward, march!” is our only option.
